“They shall speak of the might of your awesome deeds, and I will declare your greatness.”
The Old Testament is chock full of the deeds of God interacting with His Creation. They range from battles won supernaturally, to cataclysmic events like the Flood. He rescues His people, Israel, from the clutches of their enemies and rains down judgment in terrifying demonstrations of His power, because He has complete authority. He has this authority because He created the existence we live in.
Our God steps into our existence and shows His love for Creation and His crowning achievement, mankind: “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” (Genesis 1:7). God demonstrates His first and mighty deed, when He creates! His ability to create is cause for us to “declare your greatness” because He did it from nothing.
The entrance of sin into His Creation did not and does not stop God from interacting. God uses man, such as prophets, to call upon His power. Elijah called down fire (1 Kings 18) and cried out to bring a mother’s son back to life (1Kings 17:22). Moses brought plagues to Egypt, and by the Lord’s command, split the Red Sea to save Israel from the Egyptian army (Exodus 7-14).
However, Jeremiah 31:26-27, foretells an awesome deed to come: “And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.” The birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ is the mighty act that brings this promise to fruition. The Holy Spirit now dwells within the believer. Our Christian heritage, starting with the Apostles, is full of miraculous deeds done through the faith of believers, all giving glory and testimony to our awesome God!
