Long ago you laid the foundation of the earth and made the heavens with your hands. They will perish, you remain forever; they will wear out like old clothing. You will change them like a garment and discard them. But you are always the same; you will live forever.
For quite some time I struggled to wrap my head around the notion that there is so much more to existence than the physical world in front of us and our finite time on this earth. I could reach out and touch the things around me but as God revealed himself, the reality of his Kingdom continues to become so much more real than anything else. And looking through my perspective as a creation of God, it all begins to make a lot more sense. Not only were we created for more, but there is also so much more to the Creator than we can possibly understand.
Just like the beginning of today's verse says, God created the heavens and the earth. But unlike the worldly things, God’s kingdom will never be destroyed, wear out, or tatter. He is always the same, forever. I don’t know about you, but it is so comforting to know that in a world of inconsistency, I can count on God to remain the same. I am not the same person I was even 10 years ago (for the better), but God has been perfect since before he spoke the ground we stand on into existence. And he will continue to be perfect forever.
Think about this: He is more reliable than the sunset or sunrise; he is more powerful than all the armies combined; he knows you better than your closest friend or spouse; he is the giver of every good gift; he is the originator of love; and he is the author of your redemption story.
So, God created the entire universe, including you and me, but how does this change your reality today? I couldn’t dream of answering that question in a manner that would even begin to cover it but let me see if I can scratch the surface. The world we live in is temporary. Life on this earth can be difficult to say the least. But we can trust and find so much hope in God’s steadfastness. You can learn about God’s wonderful nature by reading his word, accepting his invitation to the most meaningful relationship, and staying connected to him in all the ways that he has designed you for. Experience his goodness, kindness, love, grace, and faithfulness, and be constantly reminded that he is all those things, all the time, forever. You don’t have to fear the uncertainty of life any longer. The waves may crash around you, but God’s unfailing steadfast love has delivered you before and he will do it again. May you have that hope to the depths of your soul.
This probably isn’t an overnight, instant change from not knowing God to trusting him without a doubt and that’s alright. But I bet there is a next step that he has for you today no matter where you are. Is it simply asking him to prepare your heart to receive the reality of who he was, is, and will always be? Or is it time for you to jump in headfirst to the abundant life that he has for you without reservation?
God, I am so thankful that you are always the same, forever. Thank you for all the ways that you have been so good to me – not because you had to but because you wanted to. Your consistency gives me peace and your steadfastness brings me hope. Help me to trust in your steadfast love every moment of every day. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
