Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
I’m a bit of a math/science nerd, and I really appreciate mathematical constants, like gravity. It’s what lets us live, work, and move around on Earth without floating off into space. Gravity is reliable, can be calculated precisely, and affects everyone the same way. I know what you're probably thinking—you can defy gravity with lift and thrust (like with an airplane, helicopter, or rocket ship). But all you’re doing is using a powerful force to temporarily counteract gravity’s pull. Once that force is gone, gravity brings you right back down.
There is comfort in constants. They are the anchors for our lives and allow us to have a firm reference point to orient ourselves. Galileo Galilei is credited with saying, “Mathematics is the language in which God has written the universe.” He understood the power of math and its constants. In fact, he is actually credited with discovering gravitational acceleration.
This brings us to the verse above… It states that Jesus Christ is a constant. Why does His “unchanging” nature matter?
It gives all who follow Jesus a steady anchor in a world that’s constantly changing, assuring us that God’s love, promises, and character never waver. The best part is that Jesus is always right there beside us, present in every moment of our lives. This brings both comfort and confidence, knowing we can depend on Him in every situation, no matter the circumstances. Essentially, it means that God’s love and faithfulness are unwavering, so those of us in His family can trust Him fully, without doubt.
Here are four key concepts that stem from this truth:
- When life throws challenges our way, knowing that God's character is fixed reassures us that He is always by our side.
- Because God doesn’t change, His promises are guaranteed to be fulfilled.
- The unwavering nature of God allows us to place our faith in Him, free from fear of inconsistency.
- Understanding that God is always the same brings peace of mind amidst life’s turmoil.
So, what does this mean for you and me?
Just as you and I rely on constants like gravity to keep us grounded and bring order to the physical world, we can trust in the unchanging nature of Jesus to anchor our lives spiritually. When life feels chaotic, uncertain, or overwhelming, His consistency becomes the steadying force we need.
Consider how often life’s challenges leave us feeling adrift—unexpected loss, difficult decisions, or the rapid pace of change around us. In those moments, knowing that Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever gives us a secure foundation, no matter what storms we face. The truth is, He’s been with us all along, present in every situation.
Whether you and I are wrestling with uncertainty, searching for direction, or simply seeking reassurance, we can take comfort in this: just as gravity holds us to the earth, God’s steadfast love and faithfulness hold us to Him, providing stability, peace, and purpose. His unchanging promises aren’t abstract—they are personal and available to us today. We need to lean into this constant, knowing we can trust Him to guide us through whatever comes next.
Lord, thank you for being the unchanging anchor in an ever-changing world. When life feels overwhelming and uncertain, help us remember that Your promises, love, and character remain constant. Give us peace in the midst of chaos, courage in the face of challenges, and faith to trust in Your steadfast presence. Help us to lean on You as our firm foundation and guide us to reflect Your consistency and love to others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
