God said to Moses: “I AM WHO I AM. This is what You are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” God also said to the Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘the Lord, the God of your fathers-the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob-has sent me to you.’ “This is my name forever, the name you shall call me from generation to generation. (NIV)
Let me just say first that I love sticky notes and wish I could have come up with the idea! But today’s sticky note question is this: How does God’s enduring sovereignty confront fear?
As we jump in, let’s define sovereignty. The sovereignty of God is the idea that God has supreme authority and absolute power over all things. The definition of fear in this question could be the natural consequence of sin or the fear of man and of evils/dangers. God can deliver from both. So how do these two ideas intersect?
Fear is a powerful thing and can render us ineffective, almost paralyzed. This is not a good place to be in. God does not want us to live a life of fear. It doesn’t stop Him from being sovereign, but it attempts to put us in charge, which is never a good thing.
Moses was a leader, but he knew that God was in charge. God reminded him that all he had to say to the Israelites was that “I AM” sent him. That’s powerful! God is the Alpha and Omega, which means the beginning and the end (Rev. 22:13). He is the great I AM.
I’ve gone round and round with fear and felt its grip on my life. I have to say that I have come a long way, and that is only because of God. So how does His sovereignty confront our fear? Our fears can show us where we lack trust. If we don’t trust God completely, fear can set in.
Like Moses needed, reminding ourselves of His overall control in our lives helps us to trust Him more. Nothing we do or say surprises Him. We are never out of HIs sight or care. That is very comforting to me, and I hope it comforts you today, too.
Dear Lord, help me to remember that You have absolute power over me, and I don’t want to get in the way. Show me, Lord, if there is any sin in my heart that I need to confess to You. Help me to trust You completely, knowing that You, Lord, are in complete control. I don’t need to fear anyone or anything because You are with me. Amen.
