Colossians 1:16-17

“for by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones, or dominions, or rulers, or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”

Behind the Scenes

We’ve spent this week taking a closer look at the second person of the Trinity, Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Today I want to wrap up our conversation with one of my favorite passages about our King Jesus. Today’s passage tells us some very important things about Jesus, truths that are pivotal to our understanding of who Christ is. So let’s take a look at some key words in this passage.

“By Him”– Jesus is the creative force behind all of creation (both visible and invisible, physical and spiritual). What this means it that Jesus was not only present at creation but that He was a key part of the creation of all things. Richard R. Melick explains in the The New American Commentary, “Jesus conceived of creation and its complexities. Creation was his idea…The Son, Jesus, actually brought the plans into existence. Through his creative imagination and power, the created order exists.”

“Through Him”– Jesus is the means by which all things came into existence. Every part of creation in the beginning and since then has happened through Jesus. Melick continues to explain, “This phrase means that creation came to be through his power and ability… John affirmed emphatically that everything created owes its existence to Jesus.”

“For Him”– Jesus is the goal of all creation, everything was created for Him, to point to Him, and to move toward Him. He is the reason, the purpose. Melick says, “The literal expression is ‘unto him.’ This means that Jesus is the goal of all creation. Everything exists to display His glory, and ultimately, He will be glorified in his creation.”

“He is before all things”– He is eternal, having existed before any created thing. There is no beginning to Jesus and there will be no end. He is not created. He is the Creator. And even more than that, “In Him all things hold together” meaning that it is by the active participation of Jesus Christ that creation continues to exist and hold together. He is the force that makes the world work, makes creation happen, and weaves all of matter together in perfect balance and harmony.

Make it Real

I don’t know about you, but when I look at these keywords I am in awe of our Savior. Jesus is not just some great man who lived or some celestial being that did the bidding of the Father God. You cannot read a passage like this and understand anything less than Jesus being amazing, wonderful, awe inspiring, eternal, and fully God. He is our Creator God, our loving Savior, our Sacrificial Lamb, our Source, our Sustainer, and our King.

The earthly life of Jesus was not the beginning of His ministry to mankind. He has been intimately entwined with His creation since the very beginning and will continue to be so until the very end and for all of eternity.

When I sit and truly contemplate the grandeur of our King, sometimes I am humbled to tears. How is it that THIS God would care for me? How is it that the Word of God choses to speak to me? How is it that Jesus, the one by whom, through whom, and to whom all of life exists, cares about my life? That truth blows me away.

I want to challenge each of you to sit in wonder of that today. Let that truth wash over you. No matter what you are going through, it isn’t bigger than Him. And He cares about you. He is the God who created all things- that means you, your family, that person at work who is driving you nuts, that neighbor who just makes things awkward, that family member who never seems to listen… Whatever or whoever is heavy on your heart today, take it to the Creator. Take it to Jesus.

He has what you need. He does not lack anything. He is enough. Follow Him, trust Him. Let Him be what you need today. Sit patiently as His child, His friend, His beloved. Let that truth wash over you. The God who is so far above us, has come near. He is God with us. He loves you.

End in Prayer

Jesus,

I am in awe of You. I am in awe of the fact that You love me. Sometimes the enormity of that seems impossible. But You tell me over and over that You love me and that You are with me. I need You near me today. I need You. Just You. Only You. Forever.

Amen
