“Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting You are God.”

Psalm 90:2

As we tie up our current devo series and head into the new year, I pray that you have had a chance to really connect with your God and Savior, Jesus Christ. I pray that you have experienced Him as Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. I pray that you have allowed Him to speak to your heart and your mind and show you His faithfulness. But if you’re not there yet – It is OKAY.

Please hear me here – there is no formula and rarely a lightning bolt to get these truths from your head to your heart. Often it takes time and work and FAITH. And with God, time is different, “For a thousand years in Your sight are but as yesterday when it is past, or as a watch in the night.” (Psalm 90:4)

Sometimes we find ourselves distant and kind of hardening our hearts. We hear others saying how they are hearing from God and having these amazing mountaintop experiences, and we’re just kind of, “meh”. We may not even want to talk to God.

Again, I think that is a normal flow of life, BUT that is where we need to lean in harder. See, as Christians, we know the truth of God. We know He is all good all the time. We know He loves us. Sometimes it doesn’t feel like He is good, and it doesn’t feel like He loves us

When the world is full of chaos, when we face challenging times, we so quickly forget Whose we are and that we are chosen, adopted, accepted, and loved by the Great Almighty. Here’s where we get in trouble, we let those feelings become our truth. We need to remember who He is, “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.” (Psalm 90:2)

I’ve had times throughout my faith journey where I have felt distant and apathetic toward God. I remember when my son was a baby, and I was going to a women’s Bible Study, and all I wanted to do was to stay home. I didn’t want to be around a bunch of people singing God’s praises because I just wasn’t feeling it. But I also knew in my head, even though it wasn’t in my heart, that God was worthy to be praised.

So, I started to pray to want to want Him. To be lit so on fire that I couldn’t get enough of Him. And you know what – He answered those prayers with a resounding Yes! Now if I find myself going in that direction and feeling rather meh and apathetic, I pray to want Him. I read His word. I serve His people. I lean in closer to the God of the universe not because I feel like it, but because I know He is faithful from everlasting to everlasting.

I was talking to a friend about this recently, and what I realized is that when we do that. When we serve and pray and read His word when we don’t feel like it – well that’s being a living sacrifice isn’t it? It’s easy to do those things when we’re on fire and feeling Him, but it’s so much harder when we’re not. The obedience to continue to worship and serve and love when we’re not feeling it – that’s a beautiful thing – and I think our God thinks so too!

So, hang in there. KNOW that God is faithful and that while this time in your life might feel like an eternity, to God it’s but a flash,

I think the lyrics to Chris Tomlin’s “He Shall Reign Forevermore” capture this beautifully:

In the bleak mid-winter, all creation groans
For a world in darkness, frozen like a stone
Light is breaking
In a stable for a throne

Slide

And He shall reign forevermore, forevermore
And He shall reign forevermore, forevermore

Unto us a child is born
The King of kings and Lord of lords
And He shall reign forevermore, forevermore

Slide

If I were a wise man, I would travel far
And if I were a shepherd, I would do my part
But poor as I am
I will give to Him my heart

Slide

And He shall reign forevermore, forevermore
And He shall reign forevermore, forevermore
Unto us a child is born
The King of kings and Lord of lords
And He shall reign forevermore, forevermore

Slide

Here within a manger lies
The One who made the starry skies
This baby born for sacrifice
Christ, the Messiah
Into our hopes, into our fears
The Savior of the world appears
The promise of eternal years
Christ, the Messiah

Slide

He shall reign forevermore, forevermore
And He shall reign forevermore, forevermore

He shall reign forevermore, forevermore
And He shall reign forevermore, forevermore
Unto us a child is born
The King of kings and Lord of lords
And He shall reign forevermore, forevermore

Jesus, thank You for being our Eternal King. Thank You that we can trust in that faithfulness and Your steadfastness. The season I am in now can sometimes feel so long. But I trust that You have a plan, and it is just a flash for You. Help me to trust Your plan, even when I don’t feel like it. Help me to walk in obedience even when it's not easy.

In the name of Jesus,

Amen
