“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.”
1 Timothy 6:10
Paul is giving Timothy instruction in this passage on the root of so much evil, money. This of course can apply to possession and so much that can be gained by money. The Governor, tax collectors and those with power had the money to go along with it. This is a big reason why when Jesus calls and eats with the tax collector’s it was a huge statement.
This also reminds me of what Jesus said to the rich man who said that he obeys all the commandments perfectly. Jesus told him “Go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.” (Matthew 19:21-22)
I’ll be honest that I have struggled with verses like these because I want my full treasure to be in heaven and not be tempted by money or my possession. So I’ve thought I’ would just give it all away to the church, poor etc.
However, the deeper point is the root, the heart issue, that Paul is talking about. It’s true that the love of money and what can be gained can lead to evil. At the same time there are Godly stewards that are blessed financially and they by no means need to sell all their possessions and give their money away to be right with God. HThe point is, what if? What if Jesus came to you and asked you to give away your money because your treasure is in heaven, would you be able to do it?
There are wise financially poor people and wise wealthy people but at the end of the day it’s a heart issue. The Bible talks about your first fruits go to the church and to God’s mission in proverbs 3:9-10 and this principle is so important because it’s saying “God first in my finances”. We are called to be good stewards of our money and as we say at ACF all the time, money reveals your heart so you can look at where you are spending your money and that will reveal where you heart is. The world will be striving to steal your attention with the god of money and all it can provide in this world but let’s never forget who our God is and how His ways are better then anything that money can buy.
God’s kingdom is an eternal kingdom that He is building and not this earthly kingdom that can end in an instant.
Thoughts to think about:
1. Am I spending too much time thinking about the stock market and financial strategies that is soaking up so much of our heart, mind and thoughts?
2. Are you constantly thinking if I can just get to this status, or make this much or get that then I will be satisfied?
3. If someone would look over my finances would they see the root of a desire to honor God with my wealth?
Lord, please help us to be wise in a world of never-ending possessions that strive to steel our eyes and affections. Help us to keep our eyes on not what is seen but what is not unseen and seeking your kingdom first. Help us to continually check our hearts and grow our roots in you!
Amen.
