“When the cares of my heart are many, your consolations cheer my soul”

Psalm 94:19

This verse is such an incredibly sharp dagger to take out in the fight against worry that wants to fill our soul, heart and mind. In looking at this verse, what a joy and a relief it is that we can relate with the psalmist and acknowledge that there are times when we feel like our worries are like a flood all around us wanting to take away our peace and joy! This is not an easy thing by any means, in fact it is a supernatural battle to look fear and anxiety in the face and say that I’m going to trust God who has promised me that he is in control of all things and who has promised me that He will guide and direct me through the worries and cares of this life.

The world wants us to escape the worries and stress of this world by escaping it through drugs, sex and rock and roll essentially but Jesus is giving us a better peace and as Christians we have an incredible word from Jesus. He has promised us that he has given us His peace that will sustain us though the storm. This peace is such an amazing promise from Jesus. Oh, to look to this peace as the remedy for so much of our trouble would help us in more ways than we could even understand.

Going back to the verse today, let’s focus in on the “care of my heart” or another word for this is anxiety. What is the main reason behind these cares and anxieties? Well, it’s fear, fear of not knowing outcomes, circumstances or anything else related to what will happen tomorrow. When Jesus says to those that are gathered near him to not be anxious, not to worry, He tells them that you can’t add even an hour to your life and rebukes the disciples for being of little faith.

Why does Jesus do this when it is our nature to be concerned about things that could happen to us? Many of these things are worthy of fear because there are fearful things out there and painful things that we may experience. Let’s remember as well, that some of these fears may come to pass. Jesus himself says that in this life you will have trouble, and David tells us that the thing he feared the most had come upon him.

However, there is also a realization looking back in these hard times, that God has been with us and will never leave us. In fact, many of these times it turns out that it’s really not as bad as what we thought that they would be and part of that is because God gives His graces to us in our hour of need in a way we do not really anticipate or even understand. My favorite analogy of worry from Charles Spurgeon is that it is like a rocking chair, you can go back and forth all day long, but all you will end up doing is wasting your energy and not going anywhere. At the end of the day, it really comes down to the future and do we really trust the God that holds our future in His hands.

This brings us to the second part of the verse “your consolations cheer my soul.” My dear reader, there is only one cure for this anxiety that wants to grip us with fear and wants us to stay in the rocking chair- and that is to trust in the promises of God! Nothing will remove fear and anxiety more quickly and effectively than the reinforcement and understanding of the promises of God.

To bring this home, the next time you are faced with a fear that is so gripping and you feel like you have no choice but to sit on the rocking chair for hours, remember who your God is! Your God is not surprised; your God knows what’s best for you; your God knows you better than you know yourself! So many times, what we need is a perspective beyond our circumstance! As Christians, our lives our not our own, they were bought at a price. Our lives belong to Christ. Come what may, Lord, increase our faith and our trust in you!

Lord, we feel weight. We feel it tying us down with so much worry and concerns about this world; what will happen to us, our spouse, children, friends, etc? Help us to remember that You have promised to give us peace, a peace that surpasses all understanding! Help us to remember that when we see the rocking chair calling our name with all the worry and anxiety and wanting to keep us there for hours that Your ways are better, Your promises are better and above all You are better and a God worthy of our trust! Help us to trust you in the storm when we encounter the trouble of this world. Lord to You we look, we trust and lean on You as our everlasting rock that we build our lives upon. In Jesus name Amen.
