Hebrews 4:12
Thoughts from Alex Morse
Dive Deeper

“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”
Hebrews 4:12
The New Testament was written in the 1st century, and the writers were familiar with Roman soldiers and their armor. The armor of God series that we are currently going through testifies to Paul’s eyewitness view of Roman soldiers who guarded him during his Roman imprisonment.
The popular weaponry of infantry would have included the gladius, a short dual-edged sword of approximately 18” to 24” length with a sharp tip. It was an effective weapon at the time because it allowed the Roman foot soldier to closely engage the enemy with his shield for protection and the short, light gladius that could slash and thrust through the enemy’s armor.
The word play and imagery in Hebrews 4:12 is so powerful. God’s word is living and active, not dead, meaning it is still applicable in our day and our circumstances. And it can be taken on the offensive, as the sharpest of swords. Not as a weapon for harm, but as a weapon to pierce the depths of our humanness, namely our soul, spirit, and our hearts. The Holy Spirit through the understanding of God’s word shapes, molds, and directs our hearts to align with His heart. This is why actively reading God’s word is so integral in our walk with Jesus.
Making Bible reading and study a priority can be difficult at times. Life, work, family, etc. can take up so much of our time and mental energy that we struggle having a rhythm in God’s word. I go in seasons myself, but the beauty of God’s love is that He continually beckons us to open our Bibles so that He can speak to us.
Diving into God’s word takes the emphasis off us and places the emphasis on God. Our desires and intentions more line up with His. He does not want to just take away your desires but wants to give you desires that come from a “new” heart and spirit (Ezekiel 36:26). But just reading God’s word for the sake of reading can seem rote and monotonous. Rather, we should read and meditate on it, slowing our busy minds and giving space for God to speak through His given word. That’s when God’s word comes alive!
Will you start the day by opening God’s word? Start in one of Paul’s letters and take one paragraph or chapter at a time. Note which words or phrases jump out. Ask God for clarity and discernment. Starting somewhere is the first step.
Dear Heavenly Father,
Give me a deep desire to read and study your word. May your Holy Spirit enlighten areas of my life that need repentance. Fill me with an awe of your infinite grace and majesty. Thank you for your word and the One to whom all Scripture points to, Jesus Christ. In His holy and precious name, Amen.
