”For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the Sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.”

This past August looks like it is going to hit the record books for being one of wettest months with constant rainfall. We had above normal temperatures for June and July with very little rain; and then we came to a slamming halt with what feels like rain every single day. If I’m honest, most days I’m not grateful for the rain but in all reality, I should be!

Rain brings the nutrients and sustains our beautiful Alaska state both now and in the future. In the same way, God’s word has been given to us to know God and to live and walk with Him. Verse ten says that the rain comes from heaven and waters the earth and gives seed to the Sower. What a perfect parallel to what the word of God does for us - providing strength and sustenance. I have been walking with the Lord for many decades and the more I look into the history and process of how we obtained the Bible, the more grateful and blessed I am at seeing God’s hand in it from the very beginning.

It must drive Biblical critics crazy that we have the greatest evidence for the Bible and what it says than any other book in history. Also, when the Bible was written, a staggering twenty-seven percent of the Bible was prophetic adding up to 1,817 prophecies (a prophecy is prewritten history). The greatest fulfillment of these prophecies was Jesus’ first coming which foretold how he would be born, details about His ministry and His death.

Jesus tells us the importance of the Bible in Matthew 4:4 “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God”. Jesus is telling us that He believes every word that comes from the Bible (also see similar passages in Matt 5:18, Luke 16:17, John 17:17). Jesus tells us in John 10:35 that the “scripture cannot be broken”; indeed, my friends it truly is the solid rock for our feet to stand on. When all else fails and fades way, God’s words will stand.

Isiah 40:8 tells us “The grass withers, the flower fades but the word of our God will stand forever.” Over all the centuries of tribulation and persecution, the word of God has and will always remain indestructible! “Forever, O Lord, your word is firmly fixed in the heavens.” Psalm 119:89. Jesus strikes the same point in Mark 13:31 when he says, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.”

Our Verse today is yet another promise of God’s unchanging and powerful word. Verse 11 goes on to say that it will accomplish what it was purposed to do. God’s word will never return void. Wow, what a promise for God! As we read the Bible each day, think of each verse like a stone that is just sharpening your sword in our armor against the enemy. What an offensive weapon; in fact it is the greatest offensive weapon that we have and that we will ever need.

1. How have you seen God’s word the sword as your offensive weapon in your life?

2. How does the promise that God’s word will accomplish what it set out to accomplish impact you and your perspective of the bible?

Lord,
Light a flame in our hearts for your Holy Word. We are amazed at your promise that this sword will do what you created it to do. May we be like David who said, “I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” May we be quick to hit our knees and say that we need You, your Holy word and the Holy Spirit every hour. Thank you, Lord for the Holy Bible, and for the ability to read it each day and draw closer to you.
In Jesus name,
Amen.
