“All Scripture is inspired by God and beneficial for teaching, for rebuke, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man or woman of God may be fully capable, equipped for every good work.”
2 Timothy 3:16-17
This week we are going to wrap up our study of the Armor of God by talking about the final piece- the Sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. I find it so fascinating that this is the only piece of the armor that is meant to fight back. Every other piece is a defensive tool meant to ward off the attacks of the enemy. But the sword of the Spirit is ours for battle.
In today’s verse we learn that all of Scripture is inspired by God. What does that mean? We believe that God worked through men and women throughout history to bring about the written word of God. Scripture is a beautiful display of how God’s Spirit moves in and through mankind to accomplish holy and eternal things. Each word of Scripture was written by a human hand, but the inspiration, the information, and the truth behind each word was given by God.
And I truly believe that is why Paul refers to the Scriptures as the sword of the Spirit. It is the tool that God has crafted and given us to fight our fight. It is strong and trustworthy because of it’s source- the Holy Spirit. And it is profitable for making us fully capable and equipped for every good work.
Did you catch that? Not only is the word of God meant to help us fight against the enemy, but it is also meant to equip us to do good too! It is not just meant to help us survive, but also to thrive! Through His word, God teaches us about Himself and draws us into a relationship with Him. And His word is there to guide us into the abundant life He has destined us for!
I don’t know about you, but there have been countless times in my life where I have wondered and feared that I am just not enough, that I don’t have what it takes, that I will fail, and that I am anything but capable and equipped for what God is calling me to. Over the last year of my life, as my husband and I have prayerfully considered and pursued church planting, those doubts have danced circles around my mind and heart.
But then I go back to the truths of this verse and so many others promising me that what God has called me to do for His name, He will empower and equip me in. See, not only do we have the assurance that God’s word is divine, but also that it is powerful. Powerful enough to fight this war against the enemy and powerful enough to strengthen a broken sinner like me. It is capable and profitable, never coming back void. It is fruitful and abundant, leading me into the truth of God’s salvation and His eternal love for me.
And when I let the word of God, through the power of the Holy Spirit, slice through every part of me, it cuts away the doubt, the fear, the uncertainty. God uses His word, His sword, to make me into the person He always meant me to be and to equip me for the calling He has placed on my life.
And friend, if you will let Him, He will do the same for you. Through His God-breathed truths in scripture, He will grow you and shape you into the person you were always meant to be, drawing you deeper into a loving relationship with the God of the universe and freeing you from sin, shame, fear, and hopelessness. His word is life, breathed out from the God who loves us more than we can ever fathom. Let it fight your battles and let it equip and complete you in the name of Jesus Christ.
Jesus,
Thank You. Not only did You live and die for us, but You knew we would need something firm, something written down and solid. You knew we would need more than tales or stories. So, from the beginning of time You used mankind to write down the truth of who You are. Lord, thank You for the Scriptures! Teach me what it means to let them slice through every part of me and make me more into the person You always created me to be!
In the name of Jesus Christ,
Amen
