Armor of God- Behind the Scenes

This new devo series we are in, The Armor of God, is so very vital to a believer’s journey with God through this broken world. Whether we acknowledge it or not, every human on earth is in a battle – actually a war – for our lives and for our very souls. If you are a believer in Christ, you already have victory through Christ in that war. However, believer or not, there is still a war raging with battles to be fought.

This picture of the Armor of God that Paul describes in Ephesians 6, is a perfect representation of everything that is needed to engage in the battle before us. We need every piece of the uniform to be able to defend against and engage with the enemy. And the very first piece of equipment we need is the Belt of Truth.

But what is this truth? Truth in today’s world can be very fuzzy and ever changing. We’re told that my truth is my truth, and your truth is your truth. Depending on the day and circumstances, my truth may change. But the truth we are talking about here is THE Truth – Jesus Christ. Wonderful Counselor. Mighty God. Everlasting Father. Prince of Peace. The same yesterday, today, and forever more.

And this picture of the Belt of Truth shows the need for all we do to be grounded in Truth. The belt was the first piece of equipment the Roman shoulders put on to gather up their robes and secure the rest of the equipment. It’s what gave them freedom of movement and ready access to their weapons. Just as the Roman soldier needed his belt, we too need a firm foundation to be agile and have freedom of movement and security when we go into battle against the enemy. Jesus is that truth! He is what we place our confidence in as we head into battle.

In our passage today, Paul is exhorting Timothy to lean on that truth. At the time, Paul was in prison awaiting execution. He was doing everything he could do to make sure that Timothy was ready for the battle after he was gone since Timothy had a tendency to be timid in the face of naysayers and false teachers. So, Paul is telling him here that it will actually require some effort to reject what the false teachers were preaching and to be proved and tried in his faith to Jesus and the true Gospel. The Truth is the Truth and Timothy should never be ashamed of it.

And that same teaching rings true for us today. We will have to work hard and diligently to grasp onto the Truth and then proclaim it boldly. In our world of fuzzy truth and cancel culture, in the face of disagreement, we need to know that we know that we know Who our Truth comes from. We cannot be timid or ashamed. We must boldly face our enemy and go on the offensive against him. In order to do that, we need to cinch down the buckle on our Belt of Truth and be ready to armor up. We cannot rely on the truth of the world or even our own truth. We have to be fully reliant on THE Truth.

What does that look like in your life? Where are you relying on the truth of the world versus the Truth of Jesus? Where is your Belt of Truth a little frayed? Do you feel ashamed to boldly proclaim the Truth to those around you? Take a minute now to pray for the Holy Spirit to reveal where you are mixing truth and being timid in your faith. Ask Him to show you where you need to reject the lies and fully accept the Truth.

Father God, help us to only look to Your Truth. Give us the discernment to know when we are looking to the world for it. Help us to boldly proclaim our faith in You. Reveal Your truth, give us courage, bless us Holy Spirit. We ask this all in the name of Jesus!! Amen.
