Matthew 25:32-40: 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ 40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

Today’s verse comes from this passage depicting the Final Judgment. One day we will all stand before the Lord to account for our lives. What will determine whether or not stand before the Lord blameless and whole to be welcomed into the Kingdom of God rests on one decision: your faith in the babe who was born in a stable, laid in a manger, and sacrificed on the cross.

Our season of advent has come to a close - but the truth and hope of its meaning beats strong every single day. We know from the Bible that Jesus was sent to earth as a pure and sinless sacrifice. His death on the cross and subsequent resurrection provided atonement for your sin, my sin, and the sins of every man and woman on earth – past, present, and future.

When we acknowledge Jesus’ sacrifice and welcome Him into our hearts, He cleanses us of our sin and sets a place for us at His table. With this, we can have confidence that when the day of judgment described in Matthew 25 comes, we will be separated as a lamb because the Perfect Lamb of God has redeemed us. Jesus is born. Jesus is Risen. Just like the shepherds, wisemen, and disciples of old did, it’s time for us to spread the good news.

I’m currently visiting family in the lower 48 and had the opportunity to attend a local church in my hometown this past Sunday. The pastor’s message resonated with me, as he encouraged us to share the good news of Jesus in 2022.

Slide

He said, “If every single Christian were to talk about Jesus during every encounter they have in 2022, how many people would have the opportunity to hear the gospel?” Can you imagine what kind of revival we would see if we made every encounter about Jesus?

Slide

I have been pondering this the past few days, and wrestled with how to practically apply the idea in my own life. I don’t know about you, but too often I use “actions speak louder than words” as an excuse to not share the gospel message. I think if I just bring someone a meal, or pay for someone’s coffee, or stay patient with the grocery clerk even though she is taking forever to check me out that somehow that will point them to Jesus. In some cases – it may! We absolutely need to act different and show the love of Christ to others just as God described in verses 35-36. By doing these things, we are doing them unto the Lord.

Slide

However, we have also been commissioned to go and make disciples of all people (Matthew 28:19). How are we going to make disciples if we don’t tell people why we choose to live differently?

Slide

For me, I want to incorporate Jesus into my daily conversations. This may be a “God bless” as I say good-bye, praying on the spot for someone who needs help, pointing to God for the strength to continue when I share with someone how my day is going, or better yet, if the timing is right, sharing my full testimony! The way I incorporate Jesus into my conversations will look different in every situation, but the key will be to always be attuned to Holy Spirit and to follow His leading in each and every encounter.

Slide

Will you hold me accountable? If you know me personally or see me at church, ask me how this is going. Ask me who I have pointed to Jesus this week. Likewise, I would like to encourage you to find an accountability partner or two. Check in with one another, encourage one another, and together work to build the Kingdom of God. Let’s make 2022 the year where every encounter is a Jesus encounter. It’s time to spread the good news!

Heavenly Father, we praise and honor you for your goodness and mercy. We excitedly anticipate the day when we can join the heavenly hosts in praising you on your glorious throne. In the meantime, we understand that you have put us on this earth for one purpose – to make disciples who will join us in glorifying you. As we enter a new year with new opportunities, we pray that you would help Holy Spirit to guide our conversations in ways that we can point to you Lord. We thank you and praise your holy name! Amen!
