"Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”

Consistent reading through the Psalms provides a great way for believers to learn how to pray to God. These poems are full of praise, thanksgiving and raw emotions as people carry the concerns of their lives to God. The Psalms are honest and real and at the same time awesome pieces of literature. The verse today comes from a series of Psalms called the Psalms of Zion. Zion refers to the city of Jerusalem, the location of God’s temple during biblical times and a reference to the future city of God on earth.

This verse is a direct quotation of God. He commands us to be still and know that He is God. Why does He command us to be still? We lead busy lives, distracted lives. Jobs, school, families, hobbies, social media, and sports keep us rolling from dawn to dusk. When we take some time and be still before Him without any distractions, we can pray, read, and meditate on His word and fully soak in His wisdom and love.

As our minds calm from our hectic routine, we can absorb the truth that He…is…God. He made everything including you and me. He knows what our week is going to bring. He knows how we will fail Him, and He knows how we will obey Him. God is in control. God is our rock. With Him as our fortress and rock, we can persevere through our trials and sufferings. We can cry out to Him in our valleys and praise Him on our mountain tops. This connection and knowledge give us a peace and strength that we cannot find in our own power. If we are still, and know He is God.

The theme this week is the statement by Jesus “I am the true vine” in John 15:1. We live, thrive and bear fruit like a healthy branch if we connect to Jesus as our vine. Prayer is a huge part of that connection. Prayer lets us communicate our praise and cares to God. God also uses prayer to shape and mold us into the image of Christ.

We are made to be image bearers of God. Jesus was fully God and fully human, and he was the perfect image of God. As we connect to Jesus as our vine, we become more and more like him as the days pass- if we will be still, and know He is God. The verse today relates how God’s name will be exalted over all the earth. It helps our connection with God to exalt Him in our prayers.

As we pray take a moment and consider the greatness of the God we serve. Before you ask for things, before you confess sins, before you even say thanks, think about the awesomeness of our Almighty God. With a word, He spoke entire galaxies into existence. He made stars and he made atoms. He crafted the amazing machine that is the human body. His mind conceived the lush diversity of plants, animals and people that populate the earth. Mountains, seas, canyons, and coves are his handiwork.

And he made you. He loves you. He loves you so much that He sent His Son to die so you can live in a healed and restored world and be His image bearer. No wonder the world will exalt Him! With such a God as our Vine, how can we not exalt him every day in our own lives? If we will be still and know He is God.

Father, thank you for all you have given me. Lord, let your awesomeness fill my mind today. Let me exalt you in my heart and to other people. As I contemplate the mighty works of your hand, let your peace and love flood my heart. In Jesus name, Amen.
