"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast."
Ephesians 2:8-9

Behind the Scenes

I love that we have no power in our salvation – that it’s by His grace alone. That takes a lot of pressure off of me to perform. It also keeps me from getting prideful about my salvation. Because I had NOTHING to do with it. It is all because of God’s love and mercy and Christ’s sacrifice.

But I want to take this to the next verse – one of my all-time favorites. Let’s look at Ephesians 2:10 “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” There is so much packed into this one verse and I think it beautifully sums up HOW we walk in our faith and gift of salvation.

First – we are HIS workmanship. His creation. His and His alone. This word workmanship conveys a personal involvement in my creation, not an assembly-line copy of a bunch of other things. He crafted me specifically the way He wanted me. That blows my mind. All of my imperfections, quirks, blemishes – those were His creation (proving that God has a sense of humor). But really, do you know how amazingly special I am? You are?

Slide

Second – we are created in Christ Jesus FOR good works. Do you see WHY we were created? For good works. That pull to do something for someone else? Yeah that’s how you were created. That moral compass to protect the marginalized? You were created with that too. Now, we also live in a fallen world, so our flesh gets in the way of how we were created, but don’t be fooled – you were created FOR good works.

Slide

Finally – God prepared these good works in advance! You see, again you were created specifically by Him, and He created YOU for works that only you can do. The potter doesn’t create an urn to put food in. He creates it for water (or better yet wine). The carpenter doesn’t build a house to put plants in. Like the potter and the carpenter, God created you for a purpose – in advance – for you to walk in.

This verse takes all the pressure off me. I have already been created for specific works by God in Christ Jesus. I don’t have to search and strive and endeavor to find what I’m supposed to do. He has already done the work. What I get to do is to stay focused on Jesus, listen for His promptings, and follow where He calls me.

I know – easier said than done. I get it. I really do. I have spent seasons wondering what the heck I was doing and what I was supposed to do. I have spent seasons fighting what He was calling me to do. I have also spent seasons where I obediently followed where He called me, and boy oh boy, the blessings in those seasons keep me expectantly waiting for His next call.

Honestly, writing these devos is one of those seasons. Each week when I sit down to write these, the enemy throws all the lies at me, and I have to consciously and deliberately turn to Jesus for the confidence and words to write. AND I have to trust that whatever I think He is saying is what He wanted me to write. I have to fully rely on the Holy Spirt to guide me. My spiritual growth in this season has been a huge blessing, and while I pray these devos bless you too, that’s not the point. The point is to continue to be obedient, focused, and reliant on HIM. Because I was created in Christ Jesus to do good works – and so were YOU!

Father God, I can’t fathom that you created me purposefully and specifically, but I am so very thankful that You did. Each day I walk in Your way, in Your purpose, in Your light is a day closer to You. Father, show the person reading this right now, that You created them for a specific purpose as well. Help them to take that first step of obedience trusting not in their power but in Yours. Show them there is no pressure because You created them for this. Help them to block out all the lies of the enemy so they hear only Your voice. And God, thank You for including me in Your kingdom work! In the precious and holy name of Your son Jesus, I pray. AMEN!!
